Katni District is located in the central part of Madhya Pradesh with the headquarters at Katni town. It is one of the district of Jabalpur division. It is 90 kilometers from the divisional headquarter. Katni District is a city on the banks of the Katni River in Madhya Pradesh, India. Katni is also called ‘Mudwara’,
There are three different stories which proves why Katni is called Mudwara. Katni junction is having half circular Mode (turn) from wagon yard. So people call it “Mudwara”.
One more story is that there was a village call Mudwara that has been given as a reward of bravery for cutting Mud (heads). A similar story is about the British government used to cut heads of Baggies and Plunderers, and hang them in squares to afraid people of doing crimes.
Katni is mingling of culture from three different cultural states which are Mahakausal, Bundelkhand, and Baghelkhand.
Katni is known as city of lime. Following minerals are found in various subdivisions of Katni.

Total area of Katni district is 4949.59 square km.101 sq km is urban and 4849 sq km is rural. Out of total population of Katni, 1,434,167 in the district, 263,543 are in urban area and 1,028,499 are in rural area.
In terms of education 1324 primary schools in Katni district , 516 middle schools , 119 secondary & senior secondary schools . For higher education Katni has 22 colleges.
Katni has developed industrial areas throughout district it has 181 production units.
Area which are developed for industries are Lamtara, Hardua & Bargawan. Total land engaged in industry are 79,779 hectares.
